What to do in July

Continur to remove spent flowers from summer flowering annuals like petunias. This will encourage a beautiful continuous display of blooms.
Check the soil of containers and wall planters. When soil is bone dry it doesn't accept moisture well. Keep soil potting mix moist for easy waterings. If potting mix is not accepting moisture, water until it runs out the bottom. Sometimes it is helpful to go back and water a second or third time to thoroughly soak the potting mix.
Regularly weed flower and vegetable beds. Use a cultivator to loosen soil and expose roots of weeds. When the roots are uplifted and left to dry the weed drys out. This also helps reduce weight in yard bags.
Cultivate exposed soil in and amongst both vegetable and flower beds to expose roots of weeds and allow for better water retention.
Check the top and underside of leaves on vegetables, flowers and shrubs for signs of leaf and pest problems in the garden.
Stake tomatoes and pinch of growth of leaf insets for better plants.
